Enterprise Demand for IPv6 Remains Soft for 12-18 Months, Says TheInfoPro

TheInfoPro released its latest Wave 2 Networking Report detailing technology adoption trends and timeframes, management techniques and trends, as well as network management strategies for the Networking sector. "Contrary to popular opinion, research from TheInfoPro indicates very few enterprises seeing a need to upgrade their network backbones to IPv6 in the near term," stated Bill Trussell, Managing Director of TheInfoPro's Networking Sector.

According to the study, only 5% of organizations interviewed have IPv6 in use today. The research also reveals that an additional 18% have expressed some interest in adopting IPv6 for their infrastructure in the next 12 to 18 months.

"Networking technology providers are gearing up for the conversion to IPv6; however, it is very clear in the conversations with the TheInfoPro’s TIPNetwork that an overwhelming majority of enterprises do not want to implement the new protocol until IPv6 is fully understood and justified," said Trussell. "The federal mandate alone may not be enough to convince the enterprise-at-large that a conversion to IPv6 is the best use of their time and budget," added Trussell.

TIP reports that enterprise networking companies including Nortel, Cisco, 3Com, HP, Juniper Networks, Extreme Networks, F5 Networks, Foundry Networks, and Force10 Networks have already integrated IPv6 support and capabilities with their existing IPv4 offerings and are ready to facilitate implementation should there be an increase in adoption rates of IPv6 among enterprise customers.
